Every time I speak or write about my security setup, the only thing that surprises people - and draws more criticism - is the fact that I run a wireless network at home. There is no password. There is no encryption. Anyone with wireless capabilities, which can see my network can be used to access the Internet.
For me, it is the basic courtesy. Providing access to the Internet for guests is the mode of supply of electricity and heat, or a cup of hot tea. But to some observers, is both wrong and dangerous.
I said that the foreign side may sit in their cars in front of my house and use my network to send spam, hear my password, and upload and download everything from pirate films for pornography. As a result, I risk all sorts of bad things happening to me, to see my IP address for the police blacklist crash through my door.
As if we didn't already know, Sony just spit out a press release announcing the availability of Skype on PSP courtesy of a firmware update due later this month. After the update, a Skype icon will be available under the Network menu, allowing users to create a new account or login with their existing one. Otherwise, it's Skype as usual: free calls between Skype users; SkypeOut to make calls to regular old phones; SkypeIn to receive calls on your PSP (just don't answer the phone in front of a potential mate). There is one notable caveat however: Skype will only work on the PSP-2000 (ie: PSP Slim, PSP Lite, PSP Petite). We're not sure if there's a hardware limitation preventing the original PSP from using the service but our best guess is that whatever microphone attachment is released may not be compatible with the older model. Also, no word if Skype functionality will be enabled in-game. More as we hear it, folks.
Google Android platform is fuelling mobile-device. Introduced this week at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, the platform open-source Linux-based powered prototypes shown by Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, Nokia, Motorola, Samsung and LG. PUBLICITY
Most of the prototypes were still on a leash for printed circuit boards, and only a handful of applications were up and running on phones. However, most observers agreed that the new mobile operating system (MOS) shows considerable promise.
Reshaping the mobile market
One thing that suppliers are reluctant to predict when the first is Android phones hit the market. But most agree that consumers should start seeing Android-driven laptops in the second half of this year.
The Asterisk.org development team has released Asterisk version 1.4.17. This release contains a fix for a SIP security issue, as well as a number of other bug fixes.
The security issue is documented in the published security advisory, AST-2008-001. The vulnerability allows an attacker to cause a crash in the SIP channel driver with a properly crafted transfer. This issue requires an authenticated session that allows transfers to be exploited. If unauthenticated calls with transfer capability are allowed, then this issue could be exploited with an unauthenticated session. Also, this issue only affects Asterisk 1.4. Asterisk 1.2 is not affected. Systems that do not use chan_sip are also not affected.
